چکیده

Ubiquitous media – the digital, multimodal content available to users through ubiquitous computing devices – holds out the promise of contextualising media objects better by making them closer to and integrating them with real-world situations. In this chapter, we present two systems that exemplify the opportunities of ubiquitous media in collocated user interaction. CityWall is a public multitouch display that took the form of as a shop-front installation. MapLens is a mobile application that augments paper maps with digital content when viewed via a mobile screen. In user studies, we observed the importance of public availability in supporting users' engagement in the interpretation and utilisation of digital media. Two concepts in particular prove important: the notions of a common stage and performative interaction. Through a more extended analysis, we describe how these concepts are able to support the future design of ubiquitous media and provide challenges, particularly with regard to effortful configuration and immediate but superficial use.

Horizontal Interactive Surfaces in Distributed Assemblies

In recent years we have seen a huge growth of interest in tabletop research and technologies. Apart from the increasing research into underlying hardware technologies and interaction mechanisms, there has also been a significant interest in the dynamics of collaboration that happens “on” and “around” interactive tabletop surfaces. Most of this work has focussed on collocated interaction, explor...

The Virtual World Gets Physical: Perspectives on Personalization

Never before has a medium been as widely available and individually customizable as the World Wide Web. Customization can occur along several dimensions — content sources and arrangements, “push” and “pull” delivery mechanisms, delivery vehicles ranging from PC-based browsers to mobile phones and fax printers. Many systems have been developed to exploit this capability and thereby personalize t...

Designing Interactive Transparent Exhibition Cases

Interactive technologies in museums enhance the visit experience by providing contextual information and fostering collaboration and participation. In this paper we revisit the design of the ubiquitous transparent exhibition case from a museum learning perspective. Transparent cases with interactive properties can complement other museum technologies and mitigate some of their shortcomings, suc...

A high-order accurate, collocated boundary element method for wave propagation in layered media

The ultimate goal of this research is to construct a hybrid model for sound propagation in layered underwater environments with curved boundaries by employing a di↵erential formulation for inhomogeneous layers and a boundary integral formulation for homogeneous layers. The discretization of the new hybrid model is a combination of a finite di↵erence method for the Helmholtz equation for inhomog...

Mining Social Interaction – Ubiquitous Sensors and Social Media

Ubiquitous social media has woven itself into the very fabric of everyday life. This results in a dramatic increase of social data. Essentially, various links between the users and their associated artifacts capture different facets of interactions and relationships. The emergence of ubiquitous and mobile devices enables the capture of such interactions also in offline contexts, and the generat...
